May is National Foster Care Month! We couldn’t think of a better time to recognize the refugee youth and families involved in the refugee foster care system and to raise awareness about the need for more refugee foster parents.
Refugee Foster Care is a vital program aiding in the refugee crisis, with millions of children displaced from their homes and in need of safe and supportive temporary homes. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are over 103 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, including more than 32.5 million refugees.
Many of these refugees are youth who have experienced violence, persecution, and other forms of trauma. While Refugee Foster Care can provide a safe and supportive environment for children in need, it can also be a challenging experience, as many youth face language and cultural barriers, mental health difficulties, and process trauma.
Refugee foster parents play a critical role, providing a safe and nurturing environment for these youth. Successful refugee foster parents are patient, flexible, and committed to supporting youth through the difficulties of the experience. In addition to providing a safe and stable home, refugee foster parents also serve as advocates for the youth, working to ensure that their needs are met. Becoming a refugee foster parent can be a challenging but rewarding experience. It also requires a willingness to learn and grow. There are also many benefits to becoming a refugee foster parent, including the opportunity to make a positive difference in a child's life, gain new skills and perspectives, and form lifelong relationships.
If you're interested in supporting youth in CCS’ Refugee Foster Care program, there are many ways to get involved! Considering becoming a Youth Mentor.
